Household Tips and Tricks


  1. To get rid of itch from mosquito bites, try applying soap on the area and you will experience instant relief.
  2. Before you wear a new garment, put a little clear nail polish on the front and back of each button. Buttons will stay on longer when their threads are sealed.
  3. To easily remove burnt on food from your skillet, simply add a drop or two of dish soap and enough water to cover bottom of pan, and bring to boil on stovetop.
  4. To remove a hem crease, sponge the material with white vinegar and press with a warm iron.
  5. Nail polish remover removes tar and grease from white leather shoes.
  6. Soothe a burned tongue. With Domino sugar. Just a few grains relieve the pain.
  7. Dye your hair. With Folgers instant coffee. Add a packet with your regular conditioner & mix well. Apply and let set 1 minute, then rinse clean for brown hair.
  8. Mirrors can be cleaned by using denatured alcohol and a soft cloth.
  9. Keep ants out of a pet food dish. With Vaseline. Rub a small dab around bottom rim of bowl.
  10. Use a little toothpaste to remove black scruff marks from appliances.
  11. White shoe polish will apply more evenly if you rub the shoes with a raw potato or rubbing alcohol before polishing.
  12. Wiping the inside of the refrigerator with vinegar helps prevent mildew because acid kills mildew fungus.
  13. White shoe polish won't smear if you spray the shoe with hair spray after it is dry.
  14. Vinegar and water will remove salt stains from shoes and boots.
  15. Clean rope trimmed shoes with a toothbrush dipped in rug shampoo.
  16. For longer lasting pantyhose, try freezing them before you wear them. Just wet, wring out and toss in a plastic bag to freeze. Thaw and hang to dry.
  17. Fresh eggs are rough and chalky. They will sink and stay horizontal on the bottom of a glass of water. The egg-white is viscous and close around the plump yolk.
  18. Old eggs are smooth and shiny. They will float in a glass of water. The egg-white is watery and the yolk is flat in an egg roughly 3 weeks old.
  19. Dried Herbs and spices lose their potency quickly. Buy only a small amount at a time. When using fresh herbs an spices, use 3 times the amount of the dried.
  20. Perk up soggy lettuce by soaking in cold water with some lemon juice. To store place in a zip lock bag with paper towel to absorb moisture.
  21. To remove mineral deposit from the inside of a steam iron, fill it with equal parts water and white vinegar. Let it steam for several minutes, then disconnect and let set for 1 hour. Empty and rinse with clear water.
  22. To remove rust on knives, pierce an onion with the rusty knife, leave it for 24 hours. Move it back and forth before removing it;
  23. Flies or bees bothering you? Spray them with hairspray and they will take a quick dive.
  24. Sealed envelope, put in the freezer for a few hours, and then slide a knife under the flap. The envelope can then be resealed.
  25. Crayon marks on walls? This worked wonderfully! A damp rag dipped in baking soda. Comes off with little effort (elbow grease that is)!
  26. Permanent marker on appliances/counter tops (like store receipt BLUE)! Rubbing alcohol on paper towel.
  27. Blood stains on clothes? Not to worry! Just pour a little peroxide on cloth and proceed to wipe off every drop of blood. Works every time!
  28. Spray a bit of perfume on the light bulb in any room to create lovely light scent in each room when the light is turned on.
  29. Place fabric softener sheets in dresser drawers and your clothes will smell freshly washed for weeks to come. You can also do this with towels and linen.
  30. Candles will last a lot longer if placed in the freezer for at least 2 hours prior to burning.
  31. To clean artificial flowers, pour some salt into a paper bag and add the flowers. Shake vigorously as the salt will absorb all the dust and dirt and leave your artificial flowers looking like new! Works like a charm!
  32. Spray your Tupperware with non-stick cooking spray before pouring in tomato based sauces and there won't be any stains.
  33. Wrap celery in aluminium foil when putting in the refrigerator and it will keep for weeks.
  34. Zippers won't stick if you rub them with the edge of a bar of soap.
  35. When boiling corn on the cob, add a pinch of sugar to help bring out the corn's natural sweetness.
  36. Cure for headaches: Take a lime, cut it in half and rub it on your forehead. The throbbing will go away.
  37. Ants, ants, ants everywhere ... Well, they are said to never cross chalk line. So get your chalk out and draw a line on the floor or wherever ants tend to march. See for yourself.
  38. Use air-freshener to clean mirrors. It does a good job and better still, leaves a lovely smell to the shine.
  39. Spread some ground cinnamon where you think the ants are coming in to the house.
  40. Basil repels flies and mosquitoes. To deter ants, use catnip. Sprinkle it in their paths.
  41. Make a mixture of 2/3 cup water, 1/3 cup white vinegar, and 2-3 Tablespoons dish soap. Spray where the ants are marching.
  42. Splashing plain rubbing alcohol on yourself and allowing it to dry will deter mosquitoes from biting you.
  43. Rub Vick's Vaporub® on your pants and legs to ward off ticks.
  44. Use half vanilla (has to be pure vanilla) and half water and for a mosquito and tick repellent.
  45. Dab lavender oil on your pulse points; it smells great on you but repels insects.
  46. Place USED kitty litter from a litter box in small tubs in several places around the garage. Mice think... "it smells like a cat--must be a cat - I'm outta here!".
  47. Buy a mesh/net laundry bag that you would use for washing nylons and 5 boxes of moth balls. Put the moth balls in the bag and hang it in your garage near the door to get rid of mice, birds, and bugs.
  48. To prevent mice from gaining entry to your garage, stop up any openings with steel wood pads. Mice will not chew through these!
  49. Sprinkle ground cayenne pepper around the garage (inside & out), and especially near entry holes. Pests don't care for the smell of it.
  50. Mice hate the scent of peppermint extract. Simply sprinkle *pure* peppermint extract on the items in your garage you don't want the mice in or on.
